Starship Flight 15: the catch push gets a Musk timeline, a software attribution, and clean hardware
From the Space digest for 2026-10-11
What happened: Musk, in a new interview circulating Oct 10 (~5:58 PM ET via NSF RT), downplayed Flight 14's engine problem — "That (Flight 14) engine glitch doesn't seem to be too much of an issue. The heat shield was robust" — and put a figure on the next flight: "Flight 15 hopefully in 4–6 weeks. The big milestone coming up, which is hopefully flight 15, is to catch the ship, making it the first full recovery of an orbital class rocket." The fuller interview relay via the "Starbase This Week" roundup (NSF StarshipTracking RT, Oct 11, ~4:09 PM ET) adds the attribution: the early RVac shutdown was due to a "software issue" — a "software glitch" that, on review, would not have stopped the ship heading into orbit. A 4–6-week window from Oct 10 lands Nov 7–21, bracketing the unofficial NET Nov 8 Pad 2-catch slot already logged Oct 7→09 — and a new CADENA flight advisory (posted Thursday, Oct 8, per the same roundup) formally sets the dates: Flight 15 out of Starbase NET Nov 8, 2026, and Flight 16 (Starlink 30-1) out of LC-39A NET Dec 10, 2026.
The hardware lane matches — and got heavier. Ship 42, which had all six engines removed after Flight 14, was placed on the Ship Cryo Stand Thursday (Oct 8), left for Massey's late Thursday night, cryo tested again Friday, and rolled back to the Production Site Friday night; the roundup says the reason for the engine removal is unconfirmed, with speculation pointing either to a Flight-14-related engine swap or a planned replacement (preflight testing targets Flight 15 "as soon as next month"). Separately, a Booster Landing Tank test article burst open near its base during a Massey's cryo test on Tuesday, Oct 6, spilling liquid nitrogen — unclear whether that was intentional stress testing or a mechanical failure. Ship 39.1 also rolled back to Massey's from the Production Site late Sunday (Oct 4), reason unclear. Ship 40's long ocean-return homecoming is finished: "securely on dry land in Texas once again" (~3:34 PM ET Oct 10, transport vessel Forte offloading Saturday afternoon at the Port of Brownsville) after a roughly 20,000-km (≈12,700-mile) sail halfway around the world — an almost two-month journey from Christmas Island that had Forte reach the port early Oct 6. The last leg played out overnight — Erik Fraser's NSF relay had Ship 40 "slowly making its way along Highway 4" toward Massey's (~1:20 AM ET Oct 11), with "the end of an epic journey for S40, now back at the Starbase, Texas production site" by ~3:40 AM ET Oct 11; the roundup notes a large crowd gathered for the welcome and that SpaceX's plans for the ship — display or teardown after inspection — are unclear. A roundup piece (Basenor) runs the Flight 15 roadmap detail layer. And the ground layer is live: an Oct 11 NSF-relay item (Nathan Commissariat, ~12:10 PM ET) has a concrete pour underway at Starbase right now, with an urgent call for a concrete pump truck/trailer for the program — pour purpose unstated in the relay, so thin realtime color rather than a gated milestone; the weekly roundup separately logs Booster 24 sections and the methane landing tank rolling through the Starfactory, plus Pad 1 OLM/SQD-arm/flame-deflector work in the Sanchez lot.
What's genuinely new: This is a development of the "space — Starship cadence: Starbase + Cape pad race" thread — the thread exists since Sep 6 (Flight 14 flown Sep 28, F15 NET Nov 8 / F16 Dec 10 unofficial schedule logged Oct 7→09). New here: Musk's first on-record Flight 15 week figure (it tightens, rather than replaces, his Aug 20 "catch in a few months" framing — still open in the prediction ledger), the Flight 14 RVac shutdown now attributed on the record to a software issue, completion of both legs of the Ship 40 transport (ocean return Oct 10 with the sail distance and Christmas Island origin now sourced, Highway 4 overland leg overnight to the production site Oct 11), Ship 42's post-Flight-14 engine removal ahead of the re-cryo, the Oct 6 Massey's landing-tank burst with its cause unresolved, and formal CADENA confirmation of the Nov 8 / Dec 10 NET dates. Active site construction at Starbase on Oct 11 itself (single relay; purpose unstated) stands from the earlier relay.
Watch: Flight 15 rollout and static fire, whether the Pad 2 ship catch actually attempts, the resolution of the Oct 6 landing-tank burst and the reason Ship 42's engines came off, and the unofficial F16 LC-39A debut (Dec 10, now CADENA-confirmed) against the slipped Oct 19/30 planning dates.
