Thorizon and TNO launch molten-salt reactor materials programme
From the Energy digest for 2026-10-16
What happened: WNN (published ~7:14 AM ET, Oct 16, 2026) reports that molten salt reactor developer Thorizon and Dutch research and technology organisation TNO have launched a materials and corrosion programme to generate the experimental data and predictive models required to qualify materials for molten salt reactors.
Why it's a development: Thorizon's molten-salt chain is already ledgered inside "newgen — SMR industrial base: fuel cycle + supply chain stacking" — the Oct 8–9 record filed the Thorizon × Urenco MOU on MSR fuel supply and depleted uranium as a resource, with a standing watch on whether the Urenco instrument names volumes. This article adds a materials-qualification layer (experimental data and predictive models) with a different partner, TNO, beside that fuel-supply MOU — the same storyline's research leg, not a new thread.
Watch: Programme scope and duration, which MSR design the qualification work feeds, and the unchanged Urenco volumes item.
