OPG's Origin Nuclear signs LOI to run the UK's planned 14-unit BWRX-300 fleet
From the Energy digest for 2026-10-22
What happened: On October 22, 2026 (~8:02 AM ET, World Nuclear News), the UK-based project company of European SMR developer and investor SGE and Origin Nuclear, a subsidiary of Ontario Power Generation, signed a letter of intent to establish a joint venture for the future operation of a planned fleet of 14 BWRX-300 small modular reactors in the UK.
What's genuinely new: Development — the BWRX-300 fleet thread already carries the September 23, 2026 GE Vernova Hitachi–SGE–Samsung C&T memorandum of understanding covering European BWRX-300 deployment (the UK among the named geographies), October 2026's PLN 500 million (about $128 million) Polish fleet financing, and the October 15, 2026 SGE–ZE PAK joint venture for six units at Pątnów, Poland. This adds the operator side of the stack: OPG is the utility behind Canada's Darlington BWRX-300, whose construction began in May 2025, and it would lend operating capability to a UK fleet rather than a home-market one. Letter-of-intent grade — the joint venture is not yet established, and no site list, schedule, or staffing detail appears in the coverage.
Watch: Execution of the letter of intent and the venture's ownership split; the named sites and utility customer behind the 14 units; the UK licensing path a Canadian operator would work under; whether OPG's operating model extends to other European BWRX-300 fleets, including the Polish one.
