Korea–US nuclear framework: $120B for eight large reactors at federal sites (Oct 1)

2026-10-02 Energy

From the Energy digest for 2026-10-02

Commerce announced South Korea would invest $120B in U.S. nuclear projects — most notably eight large reactors at federal sites: six Westinghouse AP1000s and two KEPCO/KHNP APR1400s, part of a larger $200B package of three projects. Continuation, not debut: on Sep 22 ANS reported the broader Korea investment MOU had been delayed partly over U.S. hesitance about deploying Korea's APR1400 domestically — Oct 1's framework resolves that in Korea's favor, at least on paper.

What's genuinely new: the $120B figure and the reactor count/set (6 AP1000 + 2 APR1400 at federal sites) are on the record as a framework agreement. A framework is not an offtake, site selection, or NRC license — the whole story now sits in conversion. Ledgered.
