Big Tech's nuclear appetite goes to uprates: Amazon × Constellation, Google × Georgia Power (Sep 22–Oct 1)
From the Energy digest for 2026-10-02
Constellation signed a 20-year power-purchase agreement with Amazon that underwrites a 190 MWe uprate at Calvert Cliffs (Lusby, Md.) — Amazon's second big nuclear move after its $500M X-energy investment. Days earlier, Google agreed to support uprates on Georgia Power's share of Vogtle and Hatch (~96 MWe combined) — an extended-uprate request filed with the Georgia PSC for Hatch 1–2, approval still pending.
What's genuinely new: uprates are now the load-serving instrument of choice — bought megawatts at existing plants rather than new-build promises. Both deals are demand-side contracts, not ownership stakes, which is the difference between this and the Amazon-X-energy line. Watch for more utilities with data-center-hungry footprints filing PSC uprate requests.
