The fuel/back-end stack thickens: SiC money, MSR fuel supply, Gronau
From the Energy digest for 2026-10-10
What happened: (1) DOE plans up to $50M over three years for silicon-carbide cladding research/testing (ANS, Oct 8) — the accident-tolerant-fuel layer funded at program scale; (2) Thorizon × Urenco MOU examining Urenco's role in the molten-salt fuel supply chain and depleted uranium as a fuel resource (WNN); (3) Urenco commissioned its Gronau uranium-oxide storage facility (built years ago; now official); (4) GAIN's fourth-round FY26 vouchers (three companies; ANS).
What's genuinely new: the supply chain's front and back ends both gained instruments — an MSR-fuel cooperation with the enrichment incumbent (the first Thorizon-anchored fuel instrument we've recorded), and cladding-money at the federal layer. The reactor-queue story of 2026 has consistently been "reactors first, fuel second" — this window reverses the emphasis slightly.
Watch: SiC grant awardees, whether the Thorizon/Urenco MOU names volumes, the General Matter Paducah queue (ADAMS materials public since Oct 5 — recorded).
