K2612 vs ICEYE X36: the first unsanctioned LEO rendezvous claim
From the Space digest for 2026-10-17
What happened: Jeff Foust RTs Jonathan McDowell (X, October 17, ~12:59 PM ET): new TLEs show K2612 made a maneuver on October 16 and is now stationkeeping within 5 km or less of ICEYE X36 — McDowell's read, to his knowledge, is that this is the first LEO rendezvous of two active satellites where the owner of one of them did not give approval. Two caveats ride along in the same post: confirmation still waits on further tracking data, and McDowell judges it does not quite violate the Outer Space Treaty ("but IANAL"). Foust's framing calls it "an unprecedented step by Russia if correct."
Why debut: The storyline record carries no ICEYE or Russian-proximity thread. Nearest adjacency is the space-weapons disclosures storyline (September 23 opening; Russia in the weekly-jamming frame), but that thread tracks deliberate government disclosures of counterspace capability, not tracked close approaches — this opens as its own watch.
Watch: Confirmation or refutation from further tracking data; any owner statement from ICEYE; Russian attribution; and whether the Outer Space Treaty/norms track reacts beyond McDowell's aside.
