What happened: Finnish radioactive waste management company Posiva has been granted a licence to operate the encapsulation and final disposal facility for used nuclear fuel at Olkiluoto, Finland (World Nuclear News, Oct 23, ~12:00 PM ET) — per the report, the world's first repository for used fuel to be granted such a licence.

What's genuinely new: the licence itself — used-fuel disposal crossing from construction to operating permission for the first time anywhere, after decades in which no country had an operating repository for spent power-reactor fuel.

Watch: dates for first encapsulation and first emplacement of canisters, annual disposal volumes, and the signal this sends to countries still sitting on spent fuel with no operating disposal route.
