Westinghouse details the $1B LEU+ fuel plant: pre-construction done, NRC amendment path named
From the Energy digest for 2026-10-23
What happened: Westinghouse's planned plant, on the site of its Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility in Hopkins, South Carolina, took a step past the Oct 21 announced investment: the American Nuclear Society reports (Oct 23, ~9:45 AM ET) that pre-construction preparation work on the site is complete, that Westinghouse has engaged with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission since 2024 ahead of submitting a licence-amendment application on the existing facility licence, and that the plant is designed to fabricate fuel with uranium enriched up to 8 percent U-235 at 600 metric tons of uranium per year.
What's genuinely new: status and specifics beyond the $1 billion announcement — pre-construction preparation complete, the regulatory path named as an amendment to the existing Columbia licence rather than a new one, the 8 percent enrichment ceiling reaffirmed, and the 600 MTU/yr target on record. Construction and production remain announced, not built.
Watch: the NRC licence-amendment application's timing, a construction schedule, and customer linkage to the operating fleet or the SMR cohort.
