White House makes Section 232 determination on foreign-made robots
From the Robots digest for Oct 29, 2026
What happened: The White House has made a Section 232 determination on foreign-made robots, after the US secretary of commerce's investigation concluded that dependence on robotics imports poses a national security risk, according to The Robot Report.
What's genuinely new: a trade-security determination on robotics imports โ a distinct instrument from the FCC's import ban, which restricted specific device classes, and one that treats market-wide dependence on foreign robots as a national-security matter. The findings phase is done; the remedy is not yet stated.
Watch: the remedy that follows the determination (tariffs, quotas or carve-outs), its scope and effective dates, how it interacts with the FCC import ban and its waiver system, and the response from import-dependent manufacturers โ Intel's fab AGVs were the standing example of US operations with no domestic alternative.
