NRC finalizes a six-month limit for contested hearings
From the Energy digest for Oct 30, 2026
What happened: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has finalized a rule under which contested hearings on license applications could be completed within six months. Contested hearings are the adversarial proceedings where intervenors challenge license applications.
What's genuinely new: Another finalized — not proposed — rulemaking aimed at speeding licensing: a time limit on hearings, following the Oct 22 rule that lets applicants with DOE or DOD-authorized reactor designs use a streamlined commercial pathway. The coverage does not give an effective date or say how the limit applies to dockets already under way.
Watch: The rule's effective date, the first contested hearings to run under the six-month limit, and whether the pushback camp extends its oversight challenge to hearing-time limits.
