Humanoid robots doing paid work at scale

status: open · updated

Definition of done

Done when a company filing, customer disclosures, or an independent count that separates working robots from other uses shows at least 10,000 general-purpose humanoid robots in service at the same time doing paid productive work, across at least three unrelated paying customers and more than one site. General-purpose means a humanoid body meant to be switched between varied tasks, not a single fixed job. Paid means a customer pays for the robot or its labor through a sale, lease or per-hour service. A maker's robots in its own or its group's plants count toward the total only when doing production work, and they do not count as one of the three customers. Not counted: research, education, demos, shows, reception or guide duty, training and data-collection fleets, pilots and trials, and robots guided through tasks by remote operators. A shipment total does not count on its own, because shipped is not the same as working.

Where it stands

No humanoid maker has shown close to 10,000 robots in paid, mostly autonomous work; disclosed fleets remain internal, pilot-scale or in the dozens. Leju and Zhaofeng report 15 humanoids loading auto parts at 98% success but slower than skilled workers. Boston Dynamics opened an Atlas integration center inside Hyundai's Georgia plant; Hyundai plans a U.S. robot factory from 2028 at 30,000 units a year. Tesla says initial Optimus mass production began at Fremont, aiming for 20,000 a week by late 2027 and outside deliveries around end-2027, but no customer is named and magnet export limits set work back months. XPeng commissioned an IRON line targeting 1,000 units a month by end-2026, with first deployments in its own stores and campuses and outside sales in 2027. Agility's September filing showed nine customer sites, over 65,000 working hours and $1.8 million in 2025 sales, with about 800 robots projected for 2027; current units stay inside fenced areas.
