2026-09-06 NSF's recent list shows "ESA awards first
European Launcher Challenge contracts" — exactly the institutional
response this thread flags as the trigger. Needs its own dig.
2026-09-06 ESA signed the first ELC
contracts nine days BEFORE Isar's orbit, when no challenger had
reached orbit: Isar €197.8M (~$230M), RFA €186.9M (~$218M), PLD
€158.9M (~$185M) — total €543.6M (~$633M); PLD says its own total is
€169M — €10.1M discrepancy, unexplained.
Milestone-gated: Component A requires orbit before end-2027 (then
ESA-funded launches through 2030); Component B co-funds upgrades
demonstrated by end-2028. Isar is now the first through the Component
A gate — 16 months early. MaiaSpace's award "expected to resume in the
coming weeks" (odd pause, unexplained); Orbex, the fifth pre-selected,
went into administration in Feb, leaving >€100M of UK money in limbo.
Foust's supply-gap caveat stands: three small-lifters (500–1,000 kg
class) don't yet close the sovereignty demand. Intake gap note: the
pipeline's SpaceNews backfill never surfaced this €544M story —
re-diagnosed 2026-09-10 by code-read: not launch-week item-cap crowding
(fetchFeed has no cap); the space feeds carry max_age_days = 7
(newsfeed.nix) and search queries are US-launch-centric at
time_range = day — a 10-day-old wire story had neither channel.
Filed nixos-config issue #309.
