What happened: SpaceX has tapped Qualcomm Technologies to provide the terrestrial base stations for Starlink Mobile, the integrated satellite-and-ground network SpaceX plans as a bid to become a "major mobile carrier in the U.S." and challenger to the existing wireless market (Via Satellite). Qualcomm will supply its Dragonwing cellular infrastructure platforms — including the Dragonwing QRU100, designed for highly integrated processing in massive MIMO radio units — and SpaceX plans a US nationwide rollout to begin in 2027, with tens of thousands of sites deployed over the multi-year agreement. Analyst Ian Fogg of CSS Insight says the deal confirms SpaceX is building extensive terrestrial infrastructure alongside its direct-to-device constellation: satellite coverage for national reach without needing a roaming partner, and terrestrial 5G sites to support urban areas.
What's genuinely new: The first specifics of the ground-network build — named Dragonwing QRU100 hardware, a 2027 rollout start and tens of thousands of planned sites, beyond the general partnership coverage of the same day.
Watch: first site deployments, the outcome of the US carriers' FCC opposition to SpaceX's spectrum plan, and when commercial service actually opens.
