What happened: Scientists, using atmospheric observations from the joint European and Russian ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter at Mars, have found potential evidence of volcanic activity: volcanic gases released by fissures in the Martian surface, a process also seen in volcanic regions on Earth (NASASpaceflight).

What's genuinely new: A named atmospheric finding pointing to possible volcanic outgassing through fissures in the Martian surface, from an orbiter circling the planet.

Watch: whether the gas signatures hold up as volcanic activity, and any follow-up observations or independent analyses.
