What happened: China's state news agency Xinhua and robot maker UBTECH unveiled two human-scale news anchor robots in Beijing on November 5, 2026, at a forum on "Artificial Intelligence and Chinese-Style Modernization" held as part of the 7th World Media Summit. The male robot "Xinyu" and female robot "Xinyan" connect to Xinhua Yudian, the agency's current-affairs and political-information AI, and are designed to read the news and answer questions face to face. Film director Zhang Yimou helped design their appearance.

What's genuinely new: The first pairing of a physical humanoid body with Xinhua's vetted-information AI corpus — the agency's 2018 AI anchor was video synthesis with no body, and Japan's Kodomoroid android read news as far back as 2014, so the physical-robot-plus-AI combination is the technical distinction, not a world first in robot newsreading. The UBTECH bodies use artificial skin and an undisclosed emotion model; developers say referencing pre-vetted corpus information reduces hallucination risk, but no error-rate results were published, detailed specs are unreleased, and it is not confirmed that all of Yudian's features run on the robots. Xinhua frames the machines as assisting reporters, not replacing them.

Watch: Whether the robots take on regular news duty, any published accuracy or error-rate evaluation, and further UBTECH hardware placements from the partnership.
