PSEG executives said on the utility's November 2 third-quarter earnings call that the two-unit Salem nuclear plant in Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey is expected to get a 200-MW uprate, with owner PSEG Nuclear receiving roughly 112 MW of the addition and Constellation owning the other 43 percent (
American Nuclear Society). PSEG's quarterly filing disclosed thermal-shield degradation inside the Salem-1 reactor vessel found during the October refueling outage — further testing and an expected outage extension follow, with repair work undecided — and the utility has notified the NRC of its intent to file 20-year operating license extensions for both Salem and Hope Creek, which together supply more than 40 percent of New Jersey's electricity. PSEG CEO Ralph LaRossa took part in the first meeting of Governor Mikie Sherrill's Nuclear Task Force on a state nuclear strategy, and the Salem site is one of six nationally holding an NRC early site permit. Watch: the extended Salem-1 outage outcome, the 20-year license filings, uprate execution, and the state nuclear strategy.
