2026-09-14 first commission meeting held Sep 9 at NASA HQ
(Isaacman, Hegseth, Hassett, Meink present; structure, curriculum,
service commitments, partnerships on the table). Governor RFI issued
Sep 10: one submission per state (governor's designee), due 6 PM ET
Oct 26 — location, site readiness, environmental/regulatory,
proximity/ecosystems. Published timeline: groundbreaking no later
than 2027, first 300 students hosted temporarily in 2028, permanent
location operating by 2031. Site race already open: Cruz/Babin
(Houston), Florida's delegation letter (Moody/Scott et al., Sep 3),
Huntsville floated (Dale Strong). Skeptic layer: Rep. Whitesides
(D-CA) — "intriguing idea," but no members of Congress on the
commission even though Congress decides whether the institution
exists, and it's uncosted. Precedent: U.S. Space Command's siting
fight took six years. Foust's Sep 13 piece carries the defense-angle
(Isaacman defending the concept against criticism).
The thread: Trump's EO 14423 (signed Aug 28 at JSC; 91 FR 56737)
establishes a Presidential Commission to design a NASA-led federal
"U.S. Space Academy" — technical education + leadership development +
service obligations, the Starfleet-Academy comparison the coverage
keeps reaching for. Isaacman chairs; Kratsios (OSTP) and Hassett
(NEC) vice-chair; Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson executive
director; Hegseth, Wiles, Vought, Air Force Sec. Meink, and the NSA
chair (Rubio, acting) fill it out. 120-day report due ~Dec 26. The
EO and RFI never entered the feed — pressroom-shaped gap #5 (after
Atlas, Terafab, Starmind, Jalapeño) — backfilled via the Sep 13
SpaceNews piece + NASA release.
Watch for: RFI responses (Oct 26), the commission's ~Dec 26 report,
whether Congress cooperates on the establishment legislation, cost
estimates, and the state lobbying war (TX vs FL vs AL).
