NRC sketches an oversight program for the coming advanced reactors
From the Energy digest for Oct 30, 2026
What happened: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is preparing oversight for a coming generation of nuclear plants whose reactor designs differ from the operating fleet — a successor shape to the Reactor Oversight Process it has used to inspect and evaluate existing plants for roughly 25 years. The agency shared its early plans for an Advanced Reactor Oversight Program at a public meeting.
What's genuinely new: The program is at an early, unstructured stage, and the NRC has now put those plans in front of the public — the first visible step toward oversight rules designed for advanced designs rather than the existing fleet.
Watch: How the program's structure and schedule take shape, any comment outcomes from the meeting, and which advanced designs first fall under it.
