The first crewed Mars landing

status: open · updated

Definition of done

Done when at least one person, flown from Earth by any country or company, lands on the surface of Mars and steps out onto it. A crewed flyby, a crewed Mars orbit or a landing on Phobos or Deimos does not count. Robotic landers, cargo-only ships, ground analog missions and simulations do not count, however much they prepare the way.

Where it stands

No crewed Mars mission has a firm date, and the hardware is still in testing. Starship Flight 14 reached orbit for the first time on September 28, 2026, deployed all 26 production Starlink V3 satellites, and flew reused heatshield tiles for the first time, though engine problems forced an early return. Flight 15 is targeted for no earlier than November 12 after Booster 22 and Ship 42 completed static-fire tests; it is meant to attempt the first catch of both stages, while propellant transfer between ships and orbital docking remain untested. SpaceX is preparing Ship 43 and Booster 23 for a first Florida launch from Kennedy's 39A, regulators are reviewing a plan for up to 456 Starship launches a year at Starbase, and a Starship cabin mockup for the Human Landing System is being built at Starbase for human-in-the-loop testing. NASA's $700 million award to Blue Origin for the Mars Telecommunications Orbiter faces a Rocket Lab protest, with a decision due around December 20.
