Thread: newgen — Urenco LEU+ enrichment · new

What happened: Urenco USA produced its first cylinder of uranium hexafluoride enriched to between 5 and 10 percent uranium-235 — LEU+ — which the company says is the first commercial LEU+ production in the Western world. Urenco's Capenhurst plant in the UK produced 7 percent-enriched LEU+ samples in a trial run in May 2026.

What's genuinely new: Commercial-scale production, not samples — the first Western cylinder above the long-standing 5 percent enrichment ceiling that many advanced reactor designs want. Russia and China have explored enrichment above 5 percent as well, according to ANS.

Watch: Which customers take LEU+ volumes, further cylinders and enrichment percentages, and whether Urenco's Western lead shapes the enrichment build-out.
