What happened: Fluor announced that X-energy selected it to provide engineering, design development, supply chain, estimating and project-controls services for the nuclear island of Energy Northwest's Cascade Advanced Energy Facility, a proposed Xe-100 small modular reactor plant near Richland, Washington. The initial deployment is expected to use four Xe-100 reactors generating about 320 megawatts of carbon-free electricity, with potential to expand to 12 units and 960 megawatts. Fluor will recognize the undisclosed contract value in the third quarter. Cascade Nuclear Partners — a joint venture of Kiewit Nuclear Solutions, Black & Veatch and Aecon — serves as Energy Northwest's progressive design-builder, responsible for the conventional island.
What's genuinely new: X-energy's second commercial contract for nuclear-island engineering and design with Fluor, after Fluor's work on the first Xe-100 project at Dow's UCC Seadrift site in Texas; the companies aim to carry learnings between projects toward standardized, repeatable execution. Cascade is the first project in X-energy and Amazon's collaboration targeting 5 GW of new nuclear by 2039, and X-energy puts its commercial pipeline at 11.5 GW, equivalent to 144 Xe-100s.
Watch: the NRC construction-permit application, further engineering and long-lead scopes at Cascade, and cost-and-schedule gains from the second-of-a-kind approach versus the Texas project.
