What happened: Japanese engineering firm IHI Corporation has received a Westinghouse order covering engineering and procurement for long-lead items for one containment vessel and the associated CA01 "super module" — for the first of three AP1000 reactors planned at Lubiatowo-Kopalino in Pomerania, the site of what will be Poland's first nuclear power plant.

What's genuinely new: The CA01 module — more than 26 metres long, 29 metres wide and 23 metres high, built from 47 sub-modules — houses the reactor pressure vessel, steam generators and other components. Plant developer PEJ authorised Westinghouse to start ordering long-lead items for the first unit in October 2026, and conditional purchase orders have also gone to Polish fabricators Energomontaż-Północ Gdynia, FAMAK, Mostostal Kielce and Mostostal Krakow; production and delivery of finished components will be handled under the later construction contract. The updated programme schedule: construction begins in 2028, first commercial operation in 2036, and full plant capacity by 2038 — three years later than previously planned.

Watch: the construction contract award, start of module fabrication at IHI and the Polish suppliers, and further long-lead orders.
