What happened: South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT finalized results of national R&D preliminary feasibility reviews and approved its "Core Technology Development and Demonstration Foundation Construction Project for Realizing Accelerated Fusion Energy" — ₩1.4813 trillion (about $1.07 billion) over ten years, 2027–2036 — plus, with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, a four-year, ₩317.3 billion (about $229 million) marine molten-salt reactor technology project for 2027–2030. An advanced-display national research platform also passed.

What's genuinely new: The fusion project will upgrade core plasma, superconducting-magnet and fusion-material technologies to reactor-like stress levels and establish a fusion energy core technology demonstration center, laying the groundwork for commercialization amid rising AI and data-center power demand. The marine MSR project targets reactor core, systems, nuclear fuel and materials, plus reactor–ship interface and safety evaluation for decarbonizing shipping — MSRs suit marine use, running at high temperatures and low pressures. Both were among the last submissions before the R&D pre-feasibility study process is abolished, and the ministry's review committee tied fusion and MSR directly to the Seven SEED Projects.

Watch: project launches in 2027, the demonstration center's site and first milestones, whether other SEED fields win budgets of this size, and what replaces the pre-feasibility-study gate.
